Refund policy
Refund & Return Policy
Select Anime curates high-quality, rare, largely pre-owned anime collectibles. Because most pieces are previously owned and held in limited quantities, we describe and grade each item individually so you can buy with confidence. Please review all photographs, condition notes, and the assigned grade before ordering, and contact us through our contact form with any questions before you purchase.
Our Return Window
We accept return requests within 30 days of delivery, and only where:
- the item is materially different from its listed description or condition grade, or
- the item arrived damaged in transit, or you received the wrong item.
Prior authorization is required for every return. Please do not send anything back before we approve your request; unauthorized returns cannot be accepted or reimbursed.
What Is Not Returnable
Because of the limited, pre-owned nature of our collection, the following are not eligible for return or refund:
- Items that match their listed description and condition grade (including normal signs of wear consistent with the stated grade: these are not defects).
- Change of mind, or a piece not meeting subjective expectations that were addressed in the listing.
- Items reported after the 30-day window.
- Items damaged, used, or altered after delivery, or returned without prior authorization.
These exclusions do not affect any rights you may have under mandatory consumer-protection laws of your country or state of residence.
If You Live in the European Union or the United Kingdom
If you are a consumer in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you have a legal right to change your mind and withdraw from your purchase within 14 days of receiving it. This right is in addition to the return rights described above, and you do not have to give a reason.
To withdraw, tell us within those 14 days through our contact form. A clear statement is enough: your name, your order number, the date, and that you are withdrawing from the purchase. Please then send the item back to us within 14 days of telling us, complete and in the condition you received it, using a tracked service.
You pay the cost of sending the item back. We refund the price you paid, together with the standard outbound shipping you paid, within 14 days of receiving the item back or of receiving proof that you have sent it, whichever comes first. If the item comes back with a loss in value caused by handling beyond what was needed to check its nature and condition, we may reduce the refund by that amount.
This section applies only to consumers in the European Union and the United Kingdom. It does not change the rights described elsewhere in this policy for customers anywhere else.
Condition Grades
Every piece is assessed by our curators and assigned one of six grades. Understanding these grades is the best way to choose the right item:
| Grade | Description |
|---|---|
| New | Factory-sealed or never opened. No signs of handling. |
| Mint | Opened but in flawless condition. No marks, creases, or wear. |
| Excellent | Minor, barely perceptible signs of handling. Displays beautifully. |
| Very Good | Light wear consistent with careful ownership. All components present. |
| Good | Visible but moderate wear. Fully intact and functional. |
| Acceptable | Noticeable wear or minor flaws, clearly described in the listing. Priced accordingly. |
Pre-Orders
Pre-orders are charged in full at checkout and ship between the official release day in Japan and 5 business days after release. Release dates are set by the manufacturer and may change.
If a release is delayed, we will email you the new expected date. You may then cancel your pre-order for a full refund by contacting us through our contact form with your order number before the item ships. If a release is canceled or we cannot secure stock, we will cancel the order and refund it in full.
Apart from these cases, pre-orders follow the same terms as other orders: they cannot be canceled once placed, and our standard return window applies after delivery.
How to Request a Return
- Contact us through our contact form within 30 days of delivery. Include your order number, a description of the discrepancy, and clear photographs showing the issue.
- We will review your request and respond within 2 business days (Japan Standard Time) with next steps.
- If we authorize your return, we will send you return instructions, including the return address and the shipping method to use. A return authorization is our agreement to receive and inspect the item; the final outcome is confirmed after inspection, as described below.
- Please send the item back with a tracked standard postal or courier service, packed protectively, together with all components, accessories, and original packaging that were included. Kindly share the tracking number with us once the parcel is on its way.
- Where our inspection confirms our error (a misdescribed item, transit damage, or an incorrect item), we will refund your payment in full and reimburse the reasonable cost of the tracked standard return service you used. Premium, expedited, or additional-insurance services are reimbursed only where we approved them in advance. In some cases we may instead offer a resolution that does not require a physical return, such as a partial or full refund based on photographs, where returning the item would be disproportionate.
Evidence Standard for Delivery Claims: Unboxing Video
To protect both our customers and our curated archive from increasingly common parcel fraud (such as item swapping, false "empty box" claims, and fabricated damage claims), we apply a clear evidence standard:
- For claims of transit damage, a missing item, or a wrong or swapped item, an unboxing video is required. Please film one continuous, uncut recording that starts with the sealed parcel and its shipping label and continues through the moment the issue is revealed.
- Claims in these categories that cannot be reasonably substantiated (by an unboxing video or, where filming was genuinely not possible, equivalent convincing evidence) may be declined.
- For ordinary condition-mismatch returns (the item significantly differs from its listed grade or description), clear photographs are sufficient; a video is welcome but not required.
This standard exists to deter fraud and keep our prices fair for honest collectors. In practice, a clear unboxing video almost always produces the fastest possible resolution and a successful carrier insurance claim.
Shipping Damage
If your item arrives damaged, please keep all original packaging and contact us through our contact form as soon as possible, with your unboxing video (required for damage claims, see the evidence standard above) and clear photographs. Where a carrier insurance claim is involved, we will work alongside you and the carrier to resolve it; we may ask you to confirm details with the local carrier so the claim can proceed.
Verification, Inspection & Final Determination
Every claim, and every returned item, is verified before a refund is finalized. The reason you select or describe when requesting a return tells us what to investigate; it is a report, not a conclusion, and it does not by itself establish responsibility on our side. Our final determination rests on the evidence submitted, our own shipment records and photographs, carrier and tracking information, and a physical inspection of the returned item.
During inspection we confirm that the returned item is the same piece we shipped and that it is complete. For collectibles, the box, blister, seals, tags, inserts, and accessories form part of the item and its value, and should be returned with it wherever applicable.
If inspection confirms the issue you reported, we finalize your refund and the return-shipping reimbursement described above. If inspection does not support the reported issue, for example where the item matches its listed grade and description or where the damage did not occur in transit, the request is handled under the ordinary terms of this policy: return shipping is not reimbursed, and the refund may be adjusted for any reduction in value that arose after delivery, such as missing components, opened seals or packaging, or new damage. Where a returned item is materially incomplete or altered, or is not the item we shipped, we may decline the refund. In every case we will explain our determination and the evidence it is based on.
This section does not limit any rights you hold under mandatory consumer-protection laws of your country or state of residence.
Refused or Abandoned Parcels
For orders shipped outside the United States, import duties and taxes are the buyer's responsibility (see our Shipping Policy). If a parcel is refused, unclaimed, or abandoned (for example because import charges were not paid) and is returned or forfeited to us, any refund will be reduced by:
- the actual outbound and return shipping costs;
- any duties, taxes, or carrier fees already incurred that are non-recoverable; and
- a restocking and re-listing fee of 30% of the item price or US$30, whichever is greater, which covers re-inspection, re-photography, re-listing, and the lost sales opportunity on a curated piece while it was reserved for you.
These deductions are disclosed here in advance, and the total deduction will never exceed the order total. The same applies to United States orders refused at delivery (U.S. orders ship Delivered Duty Paid, so refusal for unpaid duties does not arise; this clause covers refusal for any other reason).
A parcel returned to us because required customs information was not provided in time is treated in the same way as an unclaimed parcel under this section.
Parcels That Cannot Be Returned to Us (Seizure, Destruction, or Loss)
The section above applies when a parcel physically comes back to us. Occasionally a parcel never comes back: customs authorities or the carrier may destroy, seize, or otherwise dispose of a shipment, most often because information or payment that only the recipient could provide was not received in time.
Where a parcel is destroyed, seized, forfeited, or lost as a result of circumstances on the buyer's side, such as import restrictions at the destination, a missing permit or identification, unanswered customs or carrier requests, refusal to pay import charges where applicable, or expiry of the storage period, we are unable to issue a refund. The item can be neither delivered to you nor recovered and restocked by us, and this outcome follows from matters that were in your hands rather than ours. We may, at our discretion, offer a partial remedy in individual cases.
This section does not apply where the loss results from our own error, including a misdeclaration in our shipping documents, a serious documentation failure on our side, intentional withholding of material information in our possession, or our gross negligence. In those cases we will refund you in full. "Our own error" has the meaning given in Section 7.4 of our Terms of Service: it requires a statement we knew to be false, or information we actually held and deliberately withheld. A customs authority's different view on classification, valuation, or origin, or information we never held, is not our error. Nothing in this section limits rights available to you under applicable mandatory consumer protection law.
While a shipment is in customs clearance or on hold, it is still in transit and is not eligible for a refund at that stage. If customs or the carrier contacts you, please respond by their deadline so that clearance can be completed; see our Terms of Service, Section 7.
Exchanges
As our stock is limited and pieces may not be restocked, we do not offer direct exchanges. If an approved return is due to our error, we will refund you so you are free to purchase another piece.
Refund Timing
Approved refunds are issued to your original payment method once we have received and inspected the returned item. Your bank or card issuer may take additional time to post the refund.
